Yes, to claim any Medicare rebates you will need a referral from your GP (valid for 12 months) or specialist (valid for 3 months).
No, you do not need a referral to make an appointment. However, if you have been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition and are eligible for Chronic Disease Management (CDM) assistance, your GP can provide you with a special referral form to claim Medicare and private health fund rebates. Your doctor may also choose to include some clinical notes that will be helpful for your visit.
